Vanished Buildings

from The Frog House by Bad Rat?

/

lyrics

Sometimes I think and I worry
about the last climbing rose
The marbled rose
the pink rose
the red rose with the white marbling
I remember picking it out as a boy
Williams’ nursery
there were four then
four marbled roses
three pink roses
on the old fence
the Wattys’ fence
the fence I couldn’t see over
the tennis fence of my distant youth
the rose knows what I know of vanished buildings
it has lost its home, its shade and its siblings
all without moving through space
its world vanished around it
the rose knows what i know of creeping doom
the climbing hydrangea began its life only a few years ago
and yet it grows with a vigor unmatched by the frail rose
the frail, frail rose
the last of its kind
the doomed rose
the thickness of the hydrangea leaf
and the ever gripping twisting tendrils
that threaten to touch to tear to suffocate and blind
grow closer
on two sides now surrounded,
the rose has watched the vanishing
has felt the shifting
and now it knows it will soon know death
and yet it blooms and knows not why
but it blooms and blooms
and in my mind too,
in my memory, you.
